We call it our "Pharmaceutical Platform Technology™," or "PPT™," and it's the production method that allows us to ensure that each and every dose of our herbal supplements has the same amount of active ingredient. This ensures a purer, more safe and standardized product for consumers.

PPT™ all started with Dr. Tam's research on an absorption technology called "SimBioDAS™." This new technology allowed Tam and his researchers to identify absorbable ingredients in an herb or herbal extract—this same technology was used for developing single herbs like Echinacea, Ginseng, Ginkgo biloba, and St. John's Wort. With the help of Dr. Jack Tuszynski at the Cross Cancer Institute, SimBioDAS™ was further developed and turned into PPT™.

 Herbal compounds represent mixtures of different components. PPT™ is the method by which SinoVeda's™ scientists identify and quantify bioactives in a complex mixture such as that of an herbal preparation. It's what allows SinoVeda to design and create more absorbable, efficacious products.

PPT™ is also the basis for the development of our new bone health system – Pearlium™. Pearlium™ is a patent-pending bone health formula consisting of a blend of highly soluble and absorbable elements and vitamin D.  Calcium and a panel of naturally occurring trace elements are extracted from fresh water oysters containing pearls using patented technology.  The extract is fortified with an optimal amount of magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D.  Pre-clinically, this formula has been shown to significantly reduce the rate of bone loss.

SinoVeda™ was founded in 2006 by Dr. Yun K. Tam—a professor of pharmaceutical science at the University of Alberta for 20 years—and his wife Dr. Nuzhat Tam-Zaman—an expert in pharmacokinetics. Their vision is to bring eastern medicine to the western world, in effect creating a new line of standardized, potent and efficacious “nutraceuticals.” 

The company's name is drawn from the cultures of the two founders: "sino" for Dr. Tam's Chinese heritage, and "veda" for Dr. Tam-Zaman's Indian heritage. SinoVeda represents the confluence of both cultures' traditional natural medicines.


Dr. Tam was a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Studies at the University of Alberta. He has published over 100 papers and review articles in refereed journals. In addition to two issued patents and book chapters, Dr. Tam presented his work in over 120 scientific proceedings. He has been invited frequently to speak at National and International Pharmaceutical Conferences. 

In the last eight years, Dr. Tam has focused his research in developing natural health products using pharmaceutical technology. His latest patent, the Pharmaceutical Technology Platform, is being employed to develop products of osteoporosis, heart disease and cancer prevention. 

Currently, Dr. Tam is an Adjunct Professor at the same institution he served for 20 years. He is also an Editorial Advisory Board Member of two prestigious pharmaceutical journals: the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Metabolism and Disposition.

Dr. Tam-Zaman, an expert is pharmacokinetics, specializing in pre-clinical studies, quality control and regulatory issues. She studied pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees there. Dr Tam-Zaman completed her doctorate in pharmacokinetics at the University of Alberta and her post-doctorate at SynPhar Laboratories in Edmonton, Alberta. She has published 23 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has one international patent to her credit.

Most recently for SinoVeda™. Dr. Tam-Zaman has been focused on working with Canada's Natural Health Product Directorate to ensure SinoVeda's™ herbal products meet the necessary regulatory strictures for sale in Canada. She has been successful in securing Natural Health Product numbers for three of SinoVeda's™ four herbal supplements.
